Technical documentation

Technical documentation for existing software, so new developers get up to speed fast, operations knowledge does not live in one person's head and a handover carries no surprises.

What you get

  1. Architecture overview with diagrams: modules, data flows and external integrations
  2. API reference (OpenAPI or GraphQL schema) with examples for each endpoint
  3. Data model description covering tables, relationships and key business rules
  4. Runbooks for deployment, backup, restore and fixing common failures
  5. An onboarding guide that gets a new developer productive quickly

Deliverables

  • Architecture documentation with diagrams
  • API and data model reference
  • Operations runbooks
  • Developer onboarding guide

How it works

  1. Discovery

We go through the code, existing notes and environments and hold short interviews with the people who know the system today.

  2. Write & review

We write the documentation from the code itself, and your team reviews each section before it is finalised.

  3. Handover & upkeep

The documentation lives in the repository next to the code, and we show you how to keep it current with every change.

FAQ

What format will the documentation be in?

By default, Markdown files with diagrams in your repository, so it is versioned with the code. On request we also publish it as a static documentation site or as a PDF.

How much time does our team need to put in?

Very little. We need a few short interviews and a review of each section; the discovery and the writing are on us.

How does the documentation stay current?

Because it lives next to the code, it can be updated with every change. We give your team a simple set of rules and, on request, maintain it ourselves on a retainer.
